September 23, 1958: Stabbed Negro Cleric Gaining Strength
NEW YORK, Sept. 23
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a stabbing victim, is recovering so rapidly that his doctors today permitted him to walk a short distance, with assistance. The Negro leader walked 30 feet to a hospital room for an X-ray examination. He was wheeled back to his policeguarded room.
His condition has been complicated by a touch of pseumonia. But doctors said it had been expected and was nothing to worry about.
